When a book becomes kinda topical

It occurred to me the other day that when The Importance of Ernestine comes out in April, some people are going to look at this book about political staffers strugging with falling in love in Parliament House and wonder if maybe I was riffing off the Barnaby Joyce affair...

I swear I am not. Can't have. I devised the plot for that book in 2016 and wrote it in 2016-2017. It was accepted for publication and the edits completed BEFORE Barnaby's tryst was revealed.

That said, anyone who knows anything about Parliament House (which is most Canberrans because it's likely you know someone who at least knows someone who works there, if not knowing someone yourself) knows that affairs happen in that place ALL THE TIME. Barnaby's is not the first sex scandal in Australia. Remember Gareth Evans and Cheryl Kernow? Remember Jan Murray's revelation that she and politician husband John Brown had sex on the table in his office in the then brand new Parliament House? And there was the original (and possibly still the best) one of Jim Cairns and Junie Morosi back in the 70s. So there was lots of inspiration for my book.

It was not inspired by Barnaby Joyce. Let me make that very clear. I find NOTHING inspiring about Barnaby Joyce...
